Y S Jaganmohan Reddy Group To Enter Fray For MLC Polls

Within 24 hours of the “open letter” written by YSR Congress Party president and former Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy that he would not field any candidate in the MLC elections, his group on Saturday announced that it would indeed jump into the election fray.

The Jagan group MLAs met at the residence of Nellore MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy and finalized the name of Ramireddy Pratap Kumar Reddy for the MLC seat. Pratap, who was in the Praja Rajyam Party till the other day and contested from Kavali assembly constituency in 2009 elections, joined the Jagan camp long ago and played instrumental role in making Jagan’s Odarpu Yatra in the constituency a grand success. He is the owner of a prominent corporate school and college in Kavali in the name of his father.

It was rather surprising strategy on the part of Jagan group to field its MLC candidate. Since Pratap is an independent candidate, it definitely amounts to violation of Congress party discipline and therefore, the MLAs are liable for disqualification from the party. Jagan hopes to garner the support of more MLAs for the victory of Pratap Reddy and it might lead to collapse of the government.

D Srinivas Second Time Unlucky For MLC Seat

The coming elections to the Legislative Council have triggered a game of one-upmanship among the ruling Congress leaders. It is well known in political circles that the APCC Chief D Srinivas is lobbying hard for MLC seat through MLAs quota. However, he faces a tough competition from his native Nizamabad district.

The former Assembly Speaker K R Suresh Reddy and former Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbeer, both from Nizamabad district, have also thrown their hat in the ring. All the three leaders were defeated in their respective constituencies in the last elections.

Srinivas has been using his clout with the high command to push his case for an entry into the Council which will, hopefully, pave the way for a senior position in the cabinet. The suave and soft-spoken Suresh Reddy, considered a close friend of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, is also employing his own methods to project his candidature.

The Chief Minister is said to be keen on securing a seat for his friend. On his part, Shabbeer Ali is believed to be lobbying hard, using his influence with AICC leader Gulam Nabi Azad. Since all the three contenders belong to the same district, the party leadership is in dilemma over whom to favour.

Will Cong Crack The Whip Against Telangana Legislators??

Is the Congress ready to crack the whip against its Telangana legislators if they continue to stall the proceedings in the Assembly?

Though the Government Chief Whip Bhatti Vikramarka asserted, for the first time, that no one will be spared, it is doubtful whether the government can afford taking disciplinary action, given the fluid political situation prevailing in Telangana.

Initially, the trouble in the Assembly was only from Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Telangana TDP legislators. However, emboldened by the ruckus created by their MPs in the Lok Sabha over Telangana issue, the Congress legislators joined the TRS and TDP members in obstructing the business in the House.

With the Assembly being unable to transact any business ever since the budget session commenced a week ago, a sense of frustration is creeping into the Government circle. The House was adjourned for the seventh consecutive day on Saturday without conducting any of the listed business amidst uproar by Telangana legislators demanding a resolution on Telangana.

"From Monday, we will crack the whip against any member who disrupts the House. It is unfortunate that we have not been able to discuss any of the public issues," the Chief Whip said.

Even the Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar, who usually maintains composure, lost his cool on Saturday in the face of furore by Telangana MLAs and expressed serious displeasure over the happenings in the House. “It is depressing coming everyday (to the House) and not being able to function. The people will not pardon us,” Manohar lamented.

''Babai'' To Have Match-Fixing With ''Abbai''

It appears agriculture minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy has entered into an agreement with his nephew and YSR Congress Party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on the Pulivendula by-elections.

As part of the agreement, Vivekananda Reddy would not contest against Jagan’s mother Y S Vijayalakshmi from Pulivendula for the by-elections to Assembly. Instead, he would contest to the Legislative Council seat under the MLAs’ quota. And the MLAs from Kadapa, owing allegiance to Jagan would extend all cooperation to Viveka to win the council seat.

Interestingly, this deal is said to be acceptable even to the Congress leadership as it wants Viveka to continue in the Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet. If he contests from Pulivendula and loses the elections, he would not be able to retain the cabinet berth and there is every possibility of he going back to the Jagan camp. So, the best way is to allow him to nominate him to the council, while fielding some other candidate in Pulivendula.

On the other hand, Jagan group MLAs have also announced their support to Viveka in the MLC elections provided he would not contest against Vijayalakshmi in Pulivendula.

Y S Jagan Pushes His Group MLAs In A Fix

The Congress MLAs owing allegiance to YSR Congress party president and former Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy are now caught in a dilemma over which way to vote in the coming elections to the Legislative Council.

By announcing that he would not field candidates in the MLC elections, Jagan has pushed his supporters in a fix. About 20 MLAs are backing Jagan as of now.

The pro-Jagan legislators, including Gurunadha Reddy, Srikanth Reddy and Ramachandra Reddy, held a meeting on Saturday to chalk out their strategy for the MLC polls.

In an open letter, Jagan has asked them to vote as per their conscience. The Jagan camp followers are now caught in a dilemma whether to vote for Congress candidates or the opposition nominees. Keeping in view the provisions of the anti-defection law, they may be forced to vote for Congress candidates. Jagan made it clear that he would fight elections only after the formal launch of his new regional party "YSR Congress. The new party would strive to realize YSR's ideals.

"We feel that we should contest in any election only after strengthening the party to be formed. Hence, we are not thinking of fielding candidates in next month's MLC elections. I appeal to those who love YSR to act as per their conscience," he appealed.

Elections for 10 seats from the Local Authorities Constituencies and another 10 from the Assembly quota are scheduled to be held next month while elections to six seats from Graduates and Teachers' constituencies too will be held.

Chandrababu Should Turn Approver On Telangana

Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Saturday advised Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu to become an “approver” before the Centre and admit that he had opposed separate Telangana formation.

TRS leader and MLA K T Rama Rao said the Centre had gone back on its December 9, 2009 statement granting separate statehood for Telangana, only after Naidu retracted on his support to the bifurcation.

“If the TDP president says he is not against the Telangana, he should turn an approver and confess to the Centre that he had done a mistake after December 9. Only then would people believe him and pardon him,” Rama Rao said.

The TRS leader said the Congress and the TDP were cheating the people of Telangana by going on their promise made in their manifestos. “Now, they are accusing us of having a match-fixing with the YSR Congress party. The fact is that Naidu and chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy have entered into a deal and are stalling the Telangana process,” he said.

Shankar Rao Joins Telangana Protestors

Telangana employees laid siege to State Secretariat bringing the traffic to a grinding halt on Saturday, in protest against the ill-treatment meted out to them by the Secretariat security staff against their leaders.

The Telangana NGO leaders who were called for a meeting by the group of ministers for a talk on the non-cooperation movement, were prevented by the security staff from entering the Secretariat. The TNGO leaders alleged that the security personnel behaved rudely with them. Within minutes, the Telangana employees gathered in large numbers, as the employee leaders announced boycott of the talks.

The protesters squatted on the road, demanding suspension of five security officials. The employees brought the traffic to a halt on the Secretariat road, as they raised slogans. Senior police officials tried to pacify them and hold talks with the leaders, but the situation did not come under control.

Interestingly, Textile Minister P Shankar Rao, who came to Secretariat to attend the duties, got down from the car and joined the protestors. A couple of Telangana MLAs, too, supported the protesting employees. It complicated the matter further. Finally, the other ministers had to intervene to resolve the crisis.

Telangana Ministers Get A Call From Delhi

In a sudden development, the Congress high command on Friday summoned Telangana ministers of the Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet to New Delhi.

The core-committee of the Congress party which held a meeting in Delhi reportedly discussed the Telagnana crisis in detail. Though it is not exactly known whether the party had come to any conclusion on the Telangana issue, it is evident that the party does not want any kind of violation of the party discipline by the MLAs and ministers. While the MLAs had detailed discussions with all core committee members last week, the ministers are still maintaining restraint.

In these circumstances, the core committee called the ministers to Delhi to find out whether they had any plans to join the agitation in the event any delay in the Telangana process. Already, the MLAs have decided to submit their resignation letters to Sonia Gandhi and wait for her decision. They also threatened to boycott the rest of the assembly session.

The core committee also had a meeting with chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in the evening to get the first hand information about the non-cooperation movement and the Telangana bandh.

NRIs Angry With Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily On T-Stand

The Telangana NRIs are angry with the Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily for his statement that the creation of a new state was the job of the Assembly. Moily's prescription that the State Assemblies must unanimously pass resolution on creation of any new state and send it to the Centre for follow-up action has come under attack from Telanganites in Britain and Europe.

In a statement, the UK and Europe branches of Telangana Development Forum have condemned the Union Minister's statement and said it reflected his complete lack of understanding about the basic constitutional procedures.

"According to Article 3 of the constitution, the Parliament can formulate the legislation on formation of new states. The President will only seek the opinion of the concerned State Assembly with a specific time-frame. Even if the Assembly opposes the legislation, the Parliament has all the powers to go ahead with creation of new states," a statement issued by the Forum's Media Secretary Nagender said.

He said it was unfortunate that a senior minister in the UPA government should be making such statements under the influence of the Seemandhra leaders. "When Seemandhra legislators constitute nearly 60 percent of the AP assembly, how can we expect the Telangana resolution to be passed unanimously," the statement wondered. The Telangana problem must be solved by the Centre instead of giving the lame excuse of lack of consensus at the state level, it said.

What's wrong with two-eyed policy, asks Chandrababu Naidu

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu is back at his ambivalent best. During an interaction with the media on Friday, he was at pains to justify his now-familiar “two-eyed” policy on Telangana issue.

Though he called for the press conference to pick holes in the Railway budget, the topic soon turned to the raging Telangana statehood demand and he struggled to wriggle out of it. “All parties are struggling to protect their own interests and tailoring their policies accordingly. When TDP does the same, why should there be criticism?” Naidu asked.

Sand-witched between the conflicting interests of Telangana and Seemandhra leaders within his party, Naidu said he had given “freedom” to his party leaders to take up programmes in tune with the sentiments in their respective regions. “What is wrong with it?” he asked, without spelling his party’s official stand on Telangana. He pointed out that it was the Congress which has to take a decision on the report of the Justice B N Srkrishna Committee. But, the TDP was being targeted needlessly as if it was creating obstacles for taking a decision.

“Is it a crime to protect the interests of the party in all the regions? On the other hand, it is the Congress which is playing dirty politics for its own selfish ends instead of finding a solution to the problem,” the TDP Chief said.

And Swapna, who has not been able to withstand Sakshi CEO Priyadarshini Ram’s torture, is believed to have put in her papers in Sakshi and took the bait from Chiranjeevi.

Interestingly, the development took place at a time when Jagan was on seven-day fast for fee reimbursement scheme at Indira Park. Swapna being his favourite editor, Jagan was apparently upset when he got the information. He, however, could do not anything as Swapna did not even bother to inform Jagan directly.

The Telangana Telugu Desam Party forum will fully support the Egypt-style of agitation to be taken up by the Telangana Joint Action Forum in the second week of March,” senior Telangana TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy said.

He said it was unfortunate that the Deputy Speaker was not allowing a discussion on the Telangana issue, when people in every nook and corner of the region were agitating for the separate statehood. “We will show our might in the coming days,” Nagam said.

Congress Playing Foot Ball With Telangana State

The Congress party seems to be playing a virtual foot ball with the Telangana issue with its leaders making contradictory statements on finding a solution to the problem.

The Telangana protagonists were taken aback by the statement of AICC in-charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs and union minister Veerappa Moily that the Centre cannot take up the Telangana issue unless the state assembly passes a resolution to that effect. The statement was confusing, because it was only on Wednesday that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said the state had nothing to do with the Telangana issue as the Centre was seized of the matter; and there was no point in stalling the assembly for the Telangana Bill.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders fumed at Moily on Friday. “The Congress party is trying to dodge the issue as long as possible by passing the buck from the Centre to state and vice versa. The people are losing patience and they will teach the Congress party a fitting lesson,” TRS leader Harish Rao said.

JC:SKC Did Not Do Its Job Properly

Senior Congress MLA and former minister J C Diwakar Reddy has blamed it on the Justice Srikrishna Committee for the present chaos in the Telangana region with regard to separate statehood demand.

JC told the media that the Srikrishna Committee had not done its job properly while making recommendations on the contentious Telangana demand.

“It is known to everybody that Hyderabad is the crux of the entire Telangana problem. However, the Committee had not done proper study or collected opinions of the people of Hyderabad on whether it should be part of the Telangana or be made a union territory. It has not proper exercise in this regard,” he said.

The former minister said the Telangana leaders had miserably failed to allay apprehensions of the Seemandhra people about the safety of their properties in Hyderabad. “The aggressive tone and tenor of KCR’s comments have created a sort of panic among the Seemandhra people and fuelled hatred among the people of two regions,” he alleged.

Lokesh Gives Tit For Tat For Jagan Mohan Reddy

In a tit for tat, Studio-N channel, owned by TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu's son Nara Lokesh, ran a story mocking at Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's Deeksha over fee reimbursement issue.

Taking pot shots at the former Kadapa MP, it wondered how he can look so energetic and fit after a week-long fasting. Pointing out that Jagan made a lengthy and fiery speech, attacking the Kiran Kumar Reddy government, without showing any signs of fatigue or weakness, the channel questioned how it was possible for a person who has been been on a week-long fast to maintain such energy levels.

The report, which made a mockery of Jagan's commitment to social causes, raised doubts over the genuineness of the fast.

Clearly, the spoof was in response to a similar damaging story done by "Sakshi" channel, owned by Jagan, when Chandrababu Naidu went on an indefinite fast in Hyderabad, demanding higher compensation for the flood-hit farmers. "Sakshi" channel had then dubbed the TDP leader's stir as fake. Replying to the political rival in his own coin, Studio-N alleged that the Jagan camp had mobilized the crowds by offering money. In fact, it telecast visuals showing some of the youth purchasing liquor bottles from wine stores. The report claimed that the youth had come to the city to attend Jagan's Deeksha.

"Those who watched Jagan addressing the public meeting at the end of the so-called fast will surely doubt the genuineness of the Deeksha," the report said.

In the south moviedom’s pecking order, it is Rajinikanth, the chasm and, then, the rest. But with the recent humongous success of Adhurs and Brindavanam, it will now become Rajinikanth, Junior NTR, the chasm and, well, the rest.

The Telugu superstar — grandson of the legendary NTR — will reportedly be paid Rs 9 crore for his next movie set to go on the floors early next month, putting him within striking distance of the Tamil superhero in terms of sheer box office appeal and money paid per film.

Neither ‘Young Tiger’ Junior NTR nor the makers of the yet-to-be-named movie - it is being produced by BVSN Prasad and directed by Surender Reddy — have come out in the open on the remuneration issue, but sources close to the star confirmed the Rs 9 crore figure to Bangalore Mirror.

Junior NTR is one of the few Telugu stars who is a sure draw even in Bangalore. His new movie Shakti, due for release, has fetched him over Rs 7 crore, sources said. With this, Junior NTR races past all the GenNext heroes in south India, except Tamil star Suriya, whose rates too have risen exponentially. But there is a catch in Suriya’s case: He commanded Rs 5 crore in 2010 because that was the cumulative amount from the tri-release - in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi - of his latest hit Raktha Charitra. His rates could go up even further as he has demanded a share in the Telugu market whenever his films are dubbed.

While Junior NTR’s current worth leaves most of us slack-jawed, industry analysts say there is nothing mystifying about it. His remuneration, they explain, is directly proportional to his track record and the fan base he commands.

Both Adhurs and Brindavanam, released in 2010, went on to gross more than Rs 30 crore. There are reports that the distribution rights of Shakti have garnered Rs 10 crore in just the Nizam area.

Tollywood Boom
It is not just NTR. The pay packet of other Telegu stars too is getting bloated. In recent years, no film featuring an A list star has been made with less than Rs 15 crore. On an average close to 20-25 per cent of a film’s budget goes as the hero’s remuneration and another 40 per cent for other actors and technicians. Only 30-40 per cent is actually spent on the shooting of a movie.

But even as the rates of stars have shot up astronomically, the Telugu film industry’s success rate at the box office remains dismally low. Last year, the debacle of films like Puli, Khaaleja and Orange came as a rude shock to the industry and generated a debate on the need for revising the remuneration of stars to keep budgets under control. Till the other day, Kiran Kumar Koneru, the producer of “Katha, Screenplay, Darshakatvam Appalraju” was a great follower of maverick film director Ramgopal Varma. In fact, he treats Varma as friend, philosopher and guide. His earlier film Siddham was based on an idea given by Varma.

However, Kiran is now hopping mad at RGV, who directed the film KSD Appalraju. For, the film has bombed at the box office and it was RGV who had brought pressure on Kiran to shell down so much money with his stupid idea of making the film.

Before coming into films, Kiran had been into construction business. His father is a big builder in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad and Kiran himself has taken up several highway projects in Madhya Pradesh before venturing into films by launching the banner “Shreya Films” in the name of his niece. His first film was Jagapathi Babu-starrer Homam and it was a hit. Then he had a legal dispute with UTV on the Telugu remake rights of Hindi film “A Wednesday.”

After Siddham flopped, Kiran was back in the construction business and made a big money there. This has apparently itched RGV to force Kiran to make the film KSD Appalraju. And the result: Kiran lost all the money he had made in the business. Now, Kiran is reportedly accusing RGV of being an iron leg in the Telugu film industry.

Channel TV9's Intention Behind Director 'RGV'

Recently, the TV9 Channel came up with an exclusive titled ‘Ram Dhamaal Varma’ and chided the movie director in their own way. As a result, RGV has reportedly decided to put a criminal case on the TV channel. However, reliable sources from TV9 are now revealing the inside story behind this.

A key person associated with the program revealed “RGV is a nation renowned director with international standard. But lately, it was looking like he is not putting focus on his films. The intention behind our program was to remind him of his potential and true abilities in a friendly way”.

He also revealed “We didn’t expect Ramu to go in for a court case as he is the most sportive person when it comes to criticism. There is also a talk that the voiceover was given by Ravi Prakash for the program. That is not true. In fact, Ravi Prakash said to stop the program as he felt it could go off mark. Many have mistaken the voiceover as his voice”.

While the point from TV9 is this, RGV says that he took the issue serious as TV9 has unethically pointed in a wrong way that he said ‘audiences are fools’ and he never said that at any time. TV9 says that those words weren’t sounded at all in the program.

The bottom line of this issue is that the program was made and aired without the knowledge of Ravi Prakash who intervened and stopped the program to prevent from going it further.

"I was here because I had to make Raktacharitra which was a story based out of Andhra Pradesh. I will now make Amma, a 3D film in Hindi and Telugu for which I will have to go to Mumbai again. I will go where my work takes me," RGV shoots.
