1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible. New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM

4. Boot Faster: The 'starting Windows 98/XP' message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds. To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys. Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.


6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don't want. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

Turn a Windows 7 Laptop into a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Here’s some new software for Windows 7 called Connectify which allows you to turn your Windows 7 laptop into a wireless hotspot. Basically, it converts your laptop into a wireless router of sorts, acting as a wireless access point for computers and wireless devices.  It’s essentially like creating your own wifi hotspot like the ones at Starbucks and other retailers.

How To Keep Yourself Online By Changing DNS Servers

There are many ways that you can protect yourself online, but one method many people probably don’t think about is changing DNS servers. Let’s face it, the average Internet user probably doesn’t even give a second thought about their DNS servers. The reality is, however, that changing DNS servers could yield both a security and performance benefit.

The best part is that to take advantage of the increase in performance and security requires no software install. In many circumstances changing two values in your router is all that is needed.

Why Should You Change DNS Servers?

 For those that are unfamiliar with a DNS server, I’ll provide a quick description for you. When you type in a URL in the address field of your browser, that URL is sent to a Domain Name Service (DNS) server for lookup. Servers on the Internet are assigned IP addresses, which are numeric addresses, and each URL is associated with an IP address. A DNS server matches the URL with the correct IP address so you are sent to the correct server on the Internet.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) utilizes a set of DNS servers to lookup URLs that you access. At times, however, you can run into problems, such as the issue recently with the major Comcast outage resulting from problems with their DNS servers. The problem prevented Comcast customers from accessing the Internet.

What many people don’t know is that they don’t realize they don’t have to use their ISP’s DNS servers, but can choose to use other servers instead. If the Comcast customers were using other DNS servers, they would have been able to access the Internet without problems.

What Are Alternative DNS Servers?

There are currently two popular choices for DNS servers that anyone can use, free of charge. Google’s DNS servers have shown to be some of the quickest available, while OpenDNS has been popular for years. I am currently using the servers provided by OpenDNS.

The main benefit is that both of the companies that manage these DNS servers have several datacenters around the world, so the performance for lookups is fast. OpenDNS goes even further by also allowing you to block specific web sites from being viewed.

If you use a router to connect to the Internet, then there should be a setting in the router’s administrative pages where you can set the DNS servers to use. By changing the DNS setting in the router, you ensure that anyone that uses your Internet connection uses the DNS servers you specified.

I recommend changing to either Google or OpenDNS for your DNS servers to realize both performance and security benefits, and protect yourself in case of a DNS outage.

How to Find Autorun Programs in Windows Systems

For a vast majority of us that use Windows on a regular basis, we have come across performance and stability issues from time to time. On a freshly formatted PC, everything seems to run pretty quick and the system doesn’t crash as often. After a few weeks, months, and years, the computer seems to get slower and less stable.

Many performance and stability problems can be traced back to programs that automatically run when Windows loads up. It seems that much of the software we install seems to want to run an application at startup. The problem is many people don’t know that there are free applications available that can help identify and stop programs from automatically starting when windows loads.

Three Programs to Identify Autorun Applications.

 Every few weeks I look at what starts up when Windows loads. I do this to ensure the performance and stability of my system doesn’t become reduced. There are a few tools that you can use (all free!) to help you identify what applications are loading up during your system startup.

    * System Configuration Utility. This tool is included with Windows so you should already have it installed. You simply run “msconfig.exe” at the “Run” command to launch it and it will show you which applications are loaded at startup by clicking the “Startup” tab. I use this one on a regular basis to control what runs as it is very easy to use.
    * Autoruns This tool is from Sysinternals and is probably provides the most complete picture of what runs at Windows startup. If you are experienced with Windows, and know what to enable or disable, then you might want to check out Autoruns.
    * HijackThis!. The HijackThis! application is used mainly by those who are trying to find malware on their computer. It analyzes your computer and provides a detailed report of registry and file settings that you can then use to determine what runs, and what settings have been changed. This is also for the more experienced Windows user.

While there are many applications available that can help find autorun programs when Windows starts, the above tools should provide a great overview of your system. It is also important to have an experienced Windows expert have a look at the information provided by the tools to determine what can be stopped or disabled.

Hide a Hard Disk partitions(Local Disks) in Windows XP And Vista

You may need to hide a drive either for security reasons (to ensure that children do not have access to a backup drive, for example) or for practical reasons (if your PC has multiple memory card readers never used).

Technically, the system uses a binary value of 32 bits where each bit corresponds to a reader. Bit 0 is the drive A, bit 1 in drive B, etc.. When this bit is “1″ the player is hidden, otherwise it is visible.

    * Go to Start, then Run and then type regedit.
    * Deploy the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer”
    * If the DWORD (32 bit) named NoDrives does not exist, start by creating (click the right mouse button and select New then Value DWORD).
    * Double-click NoDrives to amend this item, select Base Decimal and enter into the data field the decimal value of the player to hide (e.g. 512 for the drive J: )
    * If you hide multiple drives, take their different decimal values and add them.
