The Congress high command has taken a serious note of the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s inept handling of the law and order situation during the recent Million March. Of particular concern for the central leadership was the way the agitators were allowed to have a free run on the Tank Bund, vandalizing several statues of Telugu icons.
Some of the senior AICC leaders even compared Kiran’s handling of the situation to that of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao whose government had watched helplessly the demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992.
In the assessment of the central leadership, Kiran displayed the same sense of callousness and indifference that had marked PV’s handling of the Babri issue.
The Congress bosses were perplexed as to why the police did not make any attempt to disperse the marauding mob which went berserk, destroyed several statues and threw them into Hussain Sagar lake. The questions are also being raised as to why the police a large number of activists belonging to BJP and a splinter group of CPI (ML) while TRS leaders and members of the Telangana political Joint Action Committee were taken into preventive custody.
